Professional development

What sets us apart

Not your typical professional development

That was different!" is one of the most common comments we hear after our workshops. Why? Because we don't waste time on fluff. Instead, we focus every minute of every session on providing educators with skills they can immediately implement in their classrooms. The result is a practical, intense PD experience that works.

Live modeling

We don’t just describe effective teaching. We show you by applying the same instructional practices we recommend, so you can see the techniques in action.

Active participation

Our workshops engage participants in deliberate practice so they leave the session able to confidently use their new instructional techniques with students in the classroom.

No wasted time

We respect teachers’ commitment to helping their students learn more faster, so we make every minute count. No fluff. No bells and whistles. Just practical learning.

Customization

We work with school leaders to understand your unique context so teachers’ work in the session is directly applicable to their real classroom challenges.

Ongoing support

We work with most schools for at least a year, often more, so learning is reinforced and results are lasting.

Our approach

Rooted in the science of learning and explicit instruction

Our professional development is built on extensive research on how kids learn. Every single technique we explain and model to teachers is based in evidence. Sources cited.

How we work with schools through the year

We customize our services for each school and organization we work with, but we’ve found the cadence below reliably delivers positive results and the ability to sustain progress longterm.

Listening phase

Our team works remotely with school leadership to understand your current instructional strengths and opportunities so we can tailor our support to your school’s unique needs.

Fall launch

A two-day, in-person session kicks off the school year strong with whole-group PD, small-group work, planning time and leadership preparation.

Monthly support

Regular one-hour sessions with leaders and/or coaches keep implementation moving, address questions as they arise, and support follow-through.

Mid year momentum

A second two-day, in-person session provides leadership coaching, walkthroughs, debriefs, and targeted support based on real conditions in classrooms.

Monthly support

One-hour virtual sessions continue to maintain momentum and help ensuring effective implementation.

Spring sustain

A third two-day, in-person session focuses on strengthening coaching, refining implementation and building the necessary internal capacity to sustain progress.

End of year planning

A final reflection and planning process identifies positive change, remaining areas of opportunity, and next steps for continued progress.

Real results in real schools

"Zach is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate people I know when it comes to staff development. ... Every teacher who hears him speak is better because of it."
Bradley Busch, Director of InnerDrive
There are many presenters who can provide engaging and relevant professional development sessions. There are also many presenters who can speak authoritatively about the science of learning. Unfortunately, there are very few who can do both at the same time. Zach Goshell is one of them.

Working with Zach Groshell has been a game-changer for our school division. He has a rare ability to translate research into practical, classroom-ready strategies that resonate with teachers… [his] partnership has strengthened our instructional leadership, sharpened our focus on evidence-informed practice, and reminded us what great teaching looks and feels like.
— Jessica Worden, Director of programs and student services, Evergreen School Division
Zach exemplifies what it means to make the complex accessible. … His work has made a lasting impact on our team—and, by extension, the thousands of educators and students we support across the country.
— Christine Teahan, The Writing Revolution
When I started teaching, I felt like I was just putting out fires as issues arose. Dr. Groshell’s coaching has provided me with the tools to manage my classroom and to put the focus on the academics.
— Taylor Burns, Spanish teacher
Zach has been an invaluable partner in our district’s efforts to improve teaching and learning. … [H]e has helped us build a strong foundation in the science of learning and, just as importantly, supported us in translating that knowledge into practical, high-impact classroom strategies.
