As explicit instruction takes off in schools off the heels of Sold a Story and the Science of Reading, leaders are looking for ways to embed key principles into their teaching framework. I was interviewed in three podcasts recently that, I believe, do a good job at explaining explicit instruction.

It’s not lecturing.

It’s not boring.

It’s not asserting power over children.

It is simply the most effective and efficient means of teaching things that students find difficult.

I quite like the podcast format, but sometimes you have to see this kind of teaching in action to really understand and aspire to it. I highly recommend the Great Teaching Unpacked documentary, which is free to watch online.

I firmly believe that engaging, research-based explicit instruction is possible for the schools that want it. I also know, having worked in a variety of settings of disadvantage, that it is absolutely crucial we get this right for the children who need us most. I recommend signing up for one of the Events I am putting on for leaders and instructional coaches to learn how to coach this type of teaching into every classroom.
