Just last week I ran an instructional coaching intensive in Philadelphia with my colleagues at Steplab. If you haven’t heard of Steplab, I would sincerely hope you reach out. Several attendees, including from The Writing Revolution and The Reading League, called it the best training they’d ever attended.

It is no surprise why so many schools are turning away from unstructured coaching formats. The “constructivist” methods that don’t work with kids don’t work for adults. More and more, we understand this in reading – especially with phonics – but can’t wrap our heads as a profession around the concept that minimally guided instruction doesn’t work for math, either.

Thankfully, we have at least one conference coming up that is evidence-based: The 2025 PaTTAN Math Conference.
