It seems to me that having to do backwards lesson design and then figuring out the appropriate amount of spaced, interleaved and retrieval practice is not the most efficient use of teacher time. Instead by selecting a Direct Instruction program such as Reading Mastery teachers have a curriculum that has baked in effective instructional practices because DI programs were “engineered to work.” Siegfried Engelmann was ahead of the “new” focus on cognitive science.

100%. The only way I know of to convince the skeptics of this is to have them teach multiple DI lessons and highlight the design features. Laura Stam is coming on soon, a new DI convert, and she said this very thing – I could never weave 6 concepts together this tightly for a sustainable amount of time.
