Today I am excited to bring you an interview with Kim Lockhart. Kim’s work focuses on the science of reading and its application in second language programs. She has been a vocal advocate on social media for moving away from balanced literacy and adopting evidence-based approaches to teaching reading. When I first encountered Kim, it was through her fantastic videos of teaching her kids on the carpet. A special treat of this episode is we will watch one of them and talk about what was going on there. Kim’s insights have been instrumental in helping educators understand and implement effective literacy practices.

Instructional coaching not working for your school?

As an instructional coach and school leader, I grew tired of bad PD and struggled to embed the ideas of this podcast into classrooms. I read the books, I went to the webinars, and I made up my own system by combining a hodgepodge of resources and strategies. I needed a better approach if I was going to make real and sustainable changes.
Steplab is a platform by teachers, for teachers, which streamlines coaching. It is both a library of techniques, similar to Teach Like a Champion, and a coaching engine that helps you to bring these techniques to teachers by scaffolding cycles of observation and feedback. It helped me become much more confident as a coach, and, as a comprehensive PD platform, it helps facilitate peer observation, targeted PLCs, and evidence-based whole school PD. As the Director of Steplab North America, I want to invite you to join over 14,000 schools and 100,000 educators who are using Steplab.
